The Daily Aztec
San Diego State University student newspaper, The Daily Aztec has been publishing its news source for more than 32,000 students, faculty, and staff every year. The school’s newspaper mainly focuses on campus local news. Since the paper first started in 1913, it has a great history with talented student writers, editors, and photographers that have covered historic local and world news events. With the help of designers, they have kept the newspaper strong. The paper publishes twice a week and features 5 regular sections: news, opinion and editorial, features, sports, and entertainment.
As a production designer with a team of designers, we are responsible for laying out the editor’s stories on a tabloid grid system. Unlike any traditional newspaper with heavy text information, we include visuals and images that correlate to the editor’s stories. This made our newly designed grid system that the designers build from more magazine-like, and easy on the eyes. With this new newspaper layout, I maintained solutions and overcame challenges designing for both regular and special issues by keeping the useful traditional aspects of the paper.
Working for The Daily Aztec, I’ve designed on regular and special issue content by maintaining the proper design rules. Not only do I organize and layout the editor’s stories, I collaborate with the editors by designing infographics and graphic models based on the articles. I also have been assigned to design special issue covers and content, with the goal to create a visually appealing newspaper.
